Yves Saint Laurent Black Mink and Fox Fur Jacket (c. 1980s)
Curator's Note
This Yves Saint Laurent Fourrures jacket dates to approximately 1980 and is made from black shaved mink with dark brown fox fur trimming the collar, front opening, cuffs and hem. The Fourrures line was established in the 1970s as part of Yves Saint Laurent's expansion into luxury fur garments. The jacket previously belonged to Farida Khelfa, one of the most influential figures in Parisian fashion during the 1980s. Khelfa began modelling for Jean Paul Gaultier and became closely associated with Azzedine Alaïa, Thierry Mugler and photographer Jean-Paul Goude. She later worked in Alaïa's studio and became director of Gaultier's haute couture salons. Khelfa was photographed wearing this very jacket as she left Alexandre Vauthier's Spring/Summer 2020 haute couture show in Paris in January 2020.

Yves Saint Laurent
Yves Saint Laurent founded his Paris house with Pierre Bergé in 1961, having previously headed Christian Dior at the age of twenty-one following Dior's sudden death in 1957. Over four decades he reshaped the modern wardrobe: Le Smoking, the women's tuxedo suit he popularised in 1966; the Mondrian collection of the same year; the safari jacket; and a series of collections drawing on Chinese costume and textile traditions, Pop Art and the Ballets Russes. In 1966 he launched Rive Gauche, making him one of the first couturiers to offer ready-to-wear. He retired in 2002 and died in 2008. The house has since been led by Tom Ford, Stefano Pilati, Hedi Slimane and Anthony Vaccarello.
