Curator's Note

From Vivienne Westwood's celebrated Portrait collection (AW 1990), this corset features the collection's distinctive Boulle print, inspired by an 18th-century toilet mirror attributed to André-Charles Boulle. The same corset is held in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, while examples from the Portrait collection are held in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The piece was also recently worn by Lisa Manoban in the "Lalisa" music video.

  • Fitted long-sleeved corset from Vivienne Westwood's Portrait collection, AW 1990
  • Black stretch velvet with metallic gold Boulle-inspired stencil print
  • Rococo-derived motifs incorporating classical figures, scrolling foliage, scallop shells, urns and ornamental devices
  • Structured bodice with pronounced boning through the front panel
  • Additional vertical boning to the central back panel
  • Scoop neckline
  • Long fitted sleeves
  • Full-length centre-back zip fastening
  • Cotton lining
