Curator's Note

This suit is from Thierry Mugler's Fall/Winter 1992 couture collection, "The Ritz," his first as an invited member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture. Staged at the Ritz's swimming pool, the collection was built with around twenty seamstresses working from Mugler's atelier, with the corset as its central structural idea. This suit was worn on the runway and was featured in the "L'Art De L'Amitié" exhibition dedicated to the friendship between Azzedine Alaïa and Thierry Mugler, held in 2025.

Thierry Mugler

Thierry Mugler founded his Paris house in 1973. Trained as a ballet dancer, he brought an understanding of the body in motion to clothing that treated the figure as something to be sculpted rather than simply dressed. The Mugler silhouette became one of the most recognisable in fashion. Drawing on science fiction, Old Hollywood glamour, fetishism and architecture, his vintage and archive pieces from the 1980s and 1990s are among the most sought-after, and his influence is visible in designers including Alexander McQueen and Daniel Roseberry.
