Curator’s Note
Tao Kurihara joined Comme des Garçons in 1997 after graduating from Central Saint Martins, and worked alongside Junya Watanabe for eight years. In March 2005, Rei Kawakubo gave her a line of her own, tao Comme des Garçons. This corset comes from this first collection, which was built around knitted lingerie and photographed for Soen in August 2005. It follows the shape of eighteenth-century stays: quilted boning channels, ribbon lacing at the centre front and a tabbed lower edge. The corset has a beige knit bodice with cream lace cups, ribbon lacing and a pointed hem.

Comme des Garçons
Comme des Garçons was founded in Tokyo in 1969 by Rei Kawakubo, who came to fashion with no formal design training. When she presented her first Paris collection in 1981, critics dismissed it as "Hiroshima chic" - dark, asymmetric, deliberately unfinished and entirely at odds with the glamour that dominated Paris fashion at the time. Her work treats the garment as a conceptual object, challenging conventional ideas of the body, beauty and gender. The 2017 exhibition Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was only the second time a living designer had been given a solo exhibition there. Kawakubo founded Dover Street Market in London in 2004 with her husband Adrian Joffe.
