From Saint Laurent Rive Gauche's AW 1977 ready-to-wear collection. This red and gold mousseline ensemble - billowing sleeves, tiered skirt, tassel-tied cords - is a strong example of Saint Laurent's Russian and folkloric references of the late 1970s, a recurring thread across both his couture and ready-to-wear of the period. A version was photographed for Vogue in November 1977, worn by Roseanne Vela.
Description
- Two-piece ensemble in red silk mousseline with gold Lurex stripes
- Blouse with wide ruffled neckline, long billowing sleeves gathered at wrists, and cord ties ending in tassels
- Voluminous tiered skirt with multiple gathers and elastic waistband

Yves Saint Laurent
Yves Saint Laurent founded his Paris house with Pierre Bergé in 1961, having previously headed Christian Dior at the age of twenty-one following Dior's sudden death in 1957. Over four decades he reshaped the modern wardrobe: Le Smoking, the women's tuxedo suit he popularised in 1966; the Mondrian collection of the same year; the safari jacket; and a series of collections drawing on Chinese costume and textile traditions, Pop Art and the Ballets Russes. In 1966 he launched Rive Gauche, making him one of the first couturiers to offer ready-to-wear. He retired in 2002 and died in 2008. The house has since been led by Tom Ford, Stefano Pilati, Hedi Slimane and Anthony Vaccarello.
