Roberto Cavalli Black Embellished Shearling Coat (c. 2000s)

Curator’s Note

This coat belongs to the bohemian strand that runs through Roberto Cavalli’s work. Cavalli founded his house in Florence in the 1970s on printed and patchworked leather and suede, and he returned to shearling, suede and surface decoration across the following decades. His Autumn/Winter 2004 collection was particularly notable for its heavily embellished outerwear. Writing for Vogue, Hamish Bowles described the collection's jewel-encrusted shearling coats, which took inspiration from eighteenth-century men's clothing. This coat is made of black shearling with the fleece showing at the wide collar, along the front edges and at the cuffs, and it is left raw at the seams and hem. The coat is embroidered with black beads and sequins are set into the back yoke, the front, the cuffs and the hem.
