Curator's Note

This knitted jacket comes from John Galliano's Autumn/Winter 1999-2000 "Maori" collection. The show was inspired by Maori chieftain portraits by New Zealand artist C.F. Goldie, staged on a set built to resemble roadworks, with models moving among hard-hatted workmen. The piece is knit in a black and ivory geometric pattern, with an oversized draped collar that wraps and falls asymmetrically across the shoulders and chest. There are four decorative large wooden buttons asymmetrically placed at the front. A runway version of this cardigan appeared styled with fringing at the collar and fastened with a brooch rather than the buttons. According to Kerry Taylor's Galliano: Spectacular Fashion, the collection's oversized buttons were likely inspired by Vivienne Westwood's Vim-Lid buttons from her Punkature collection, images of which were found in Galliano's own research materials.

John Galliano

John Galliano graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1984 with Les Incroyables, a collection drawn from the French Revolution bought in its entirety by Browns. He moved to Paris in the early 1990s, staging shows in borrowed hôtels particuliers that attracted Princess Diana, Madonna and LVMH, leading to appointments at Givenchy in 1995 and Christian Dior in 1996. Under his own label he ran concurrently with both houses, his work was shaped by romantic storytelling, bias-cut construction and historical characters drawn from across cultures and centuries. He was named British Designer of the Year four times.
