Curator’s note

This jumpsuit is look 41 from Frida Giannini's Fall/Winter 2009 collection for Gucci. Giannini described the collection as built for "a dangerous woman," referencing Tina Chow and a glittering, nightclub-driven idea of going out, a brief corroborated by both Vogue and WWD's coverage of the show. The collection ran on a dark, glitzy palette of sequins, lurex and lamé, with hard-edged glamour set against slicked-back hair and mirrored sunglasses on the runway. This crystal-covered jumpsuit is a great example of this nightclub aesthetic. The tapered leg and drawstring waist echo the skinny-leg trouser silhouette Giannini repeated throughout the show in her signature Frida pantsuit, a house style she introduced in her first collection and continued to develop across multiple fabrications this season.

Frida Giannini for Gucci

Frida Giannini was Gucci's creative director from 2006 to 2015, bringing the house's own archive to the centre of her work: the Gucci Flora print, the Bamboo bag, the Horsebit, the Web stripe, and reimagining these codes for a new decade. Her collections are characterised by a slim, elongated silhouette, floral printed silk, tailored suiting and embellished eveningwear. As collector interest in 2000s and early 2010s designer fashion grows, her work is increasingly recognised for its construction quality and deep connection to Gucci's codes.
