Fendi Orchid Embroidered Coat by Karl Lagerfeld (C 2015)

Karl Lagerfeld was appointed creative director of Fendi in 1965 and held the position for fifty-four years until his death in 2019, the longest collaboration between a designer and a house in fashion history. He arrived at a traditional Roman furrier and immediately began reworking the material: removing heavy linings, shaving fur, layering it with other fabrics, and making it wearable beyond the winter season for the first time. In one of his first meetings with the Fendi sisters he sketched the FF logo, standing for Fun Furs, in a matter of seconds. He launched women's ready-to-wear for the house in 1977 and later created Haute Fourrure as a fur couture category, staging its debut show on a glass catwalk built over the Trevi Fountain in Rome. He designed over 100 collections for Fendi across his tenure, simultaneously holding the creative directorship of Chanel from 1983 onward.
