Christian Dior Silk Denim Saddle Dress and Top Set by John Galliano (Spring/Summer 2000)
Curator's Note
This silk denim skirt and top set was designed by John Galliano for Christian Dior's Spring/Summer 2000 collection. The season, sometimes referred to as "Logomania," paired denim and other workwear fabrics with the house's equestrian codes and oversized branded hardware, and introduced the Saddle bag. Galliano has cited Lauryn Hill as a muse for the collection, and the pairing of indigo denim with gilt Dior lettering reflects the season's wider engagement with the era's hip-hop styling. The halter strap, shared between the dress and the top has the oversized gold-tone letters spelling "C" and "D," the collection's most visible piece of logomania hardware. Both garments are cut from indigo silk denim with contrast tan topstitching along angled seam lines, and are lined in a printed equestrian silk in blue and gold tones.

John Galliano for Christian Dior
John Galliano was appointed creative director of Christian Dior in 1996, bringing fifteen years of theatrical, historically driven collections to the house. His references ranged across Marchesa Casati, Egyptian antiquity, the Belle Époque, Japanese geisha culture and the Parisian demi-monde, each season staged as a full narrative. Under his direction Dior tripled its turnover and produced some of the most collected ready-to-wear and haute couture of the era, including the iconic Saddle Bag.
