Curator’s note
A sequinned Le Smoking dress from Chanel's Métiers d'Art Pre-Fall 2017 collection, 'Paris Cosmopolite'. Karl Lagerfeld staged the collection at the newly refurbished Ritz Paris, referencing the hotel's history as the home of Gabrielle Chanel, as well as a gathering place for cosmopolitan society rather than any single decade, with the show unfolding across the lobby and a purpose-built winter garden. The tuxedo silhouette of this dress is rendered entirely in a shimmer of black, clear, gold and silver sequins with black florette-shaped paillettes, finished with black satin lapels and smoke-grey resin buttons set with rhinestone CC centres. As seen on the runway, on Janelle Monáe at the Pre-Oscar Awards Dinner in 2017, as well as on Anna Brewster.

Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel
Karl Lagerfeld was appointed creative director of Chanel in 1983 and spent thirty-six years reinterpreting the Chanel codes: the tweed suit, the quilted handbag, the little black dress, the CC monogram, across collections that also became known for their extraordinary runway spectacle. What he found, in his own words, was a “sleeping beauty” - a house with a clear heritage but no contemporary relevance. He rebuilt it into one of the most recognised luxury houses in the world.
