Chanel Sequined Egyptomania Coat Dress by Karl Lagerfeld (Pre-Fall 2019)

Curator's Note

This Chanel coat dress was presented as Look 32 from the Métiers d’Art Pre-Fall 2019 collection, Egyptomania, and it was one of Karl Lagerfeld’s final collections for the house. Shown inside the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the collection drew inspiration from ancient Egypt. The dress has distinctively broad shoulders, recalling the wide collars seen in Egyptian paintings and jewellery. It is entirely covered in black and gold sequins. The dress is double breasted with blue and gold scarab buttons. In Egyptian art, the scarab was a symbol of rebirth and regeneration, protection and the rising sun. Lagerfeld used it repeatedly across the collection, including on bags, jewellery and clothes.
