Curator's Note

This navy cotton poplin dress is from Chanel's Autumn/Winter 1988–89 ready-to-wear collection by Karl Lagerfeld. Presented in Paris in March 1988, the collection marked a return to more traditional Chanel designs after several seasons of shorter hemlines and playful styling. Lagerfeld placed renewed emphasis on the house's familiar codes, particularly gold buttons, belts and longer skirts. The dress has a fitted waist, peplum and asymmetric front closure, with gold-tone camellia buttons and a large rope-effect belt buckle. The same distinctive buckle and gold buttons appeared on a series of brightly coloured ensembles presented together on the runway.

Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld was appointed creative director of Chanel in 1983 and spent thirty-six years reinterpreting the Chanel codes: the tweed suit, the quilted handbag, the little black dress, the CC monogram, across collections that also became known for their extraordinary runway spectacle. What he found, in his own words, was a “sleeping beauty” - a house with a clear heritage but no contemporary relevance. He rebuilt it into one of the most recognised luxury houses in the world.
