Curator's Note

Karl Lagerfeld took over as creative director of Chanel in 1983, bringing a new direction to the house while retaining many of the elements established by Gabrielle Chanel. The tweed suit remained central to his collections, with Lagerfeld experimenting with its proportions, colours and detailing throughout the decade. This red tweed skirt suit dates to Chanel's haute couture collections of the 1980s. The fitted jacket has notched lapels, four decorative pocket flaps and gold-toned CC buttons, with a matching straight skirt. The original haute couture label is intact, including the handwritten model numbers.

Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld was appointed creative director of Chanel in 1983 and spent thirty-six years reinterpreting the Chanel codes: the tweed suit, the quilted handbag, the little black dress, the CC monogram, across collections that also became known for their extraordinary runway spectacle. What he found, in his own words, was a “sleeping beauty” - a house with a clear heritage but no contemporary relevance. He rebuilt it into one of the most recognised luxury houses in the world.
