Curator's Note

This cropped jacket from Chanel's Autumn/Winter 2018-2019 collection under Karl Lagerfeld combines the house's signature tweed with tiered faux fur panels. Lagerfeld staged the collection inside the Grand Palais transformed into a dark forest, with bare trees and fallen leaves, and built the clothing around coats and outerwear in mottled textures and deep greens and browns. The jacket appeared on the runway and on the cover of Vogue Korea's September 2018 issue, worn by Lily-Rose Depp.

Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld was appointed creative director of Chanel in 1983 and spent thirty-six years reinterpreting the Chanel codes: the tweed suit, the quilted handbag, the little black dress, the CC monogram, across collections that also became known for their extraordinary runway spectacle. What he found, in his own words, was a “sleeping beauty” - a house with a clear heritage but no contemporary relevance. He rebuilt it into one of the most recognised luxury houses in the world.
