Curator's Note

This Chanel blue tweed jacket comes from Karl Lagerfeld’s Paris-Dallas Métiers d’Art Pre-Fall 2014 collection, presented in Dallas in December 2013. As all other Métiers d’Art collections, this location was significant for Chanel: in 1957, Neiman Marcus awarded Gabrielle Chanel its Award for Distinguished Service in the Field of Fashion after American buyers had embraced her 1954 comeback collection. Lagerfeld received the same award in Dallas around the time of this show. The collection revisited the American West through Chanel materials and house codes: tweed, braid, stars, boots, fringe, prairie references and sheriff-style hardware. This jacket is made of classic Chanel tweed with silver-tone CC sheriff-badge buttons and star studs.

Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld was appointed creative director of Chanel in 1983 and spent thirty-six years reinterpreting the Chanel codes: the tweed suit, the quilted handbag, the little black dress, the CC monogram, across collections that also became known for their extraordinary runway spectacle. What he found, in his own words, was a “sleeping beauty” - a house with a clear heritage but no contemporary relevance. He rebuilt it into one of the most recognised luxury houses in the world.
