Curator's Note

This double-breasted wool coat was designed by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel. The coat is fully lined in black and white houndstooth, which is visible on the collar and lapels. The front, collar, seams and cuffs have a black looped braid trim. The coat fastens with silver-toned CC buttons framed in black resin, and each cuff has a strap with a matching metal buckle. The back of the coat has a buttoned half-belt above an inverted pleat. The braided trim, CC buttons and black and white colour scheme are all familiar elements of Chanel's designs, dating back to the house's early years.

Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld was appointed creative director of Chanel in 1983 and spent thirty-six years reinterpreting the Chanel codes: the tweed suit, the quilted handbag, the little black dress, the CC monogram, across collections that also became known for their extraordinary runway spectacle. What he found, in his own words, was a “sleeping beauty” - a house with a clear heritage but no contemporary relevance. He rebuilt it into one of the most recognised luxury houses in the world.
