Curator's Note

This Chanel black wool bouclé coat was part of the Métiers d’Art Pre-Fall 2017 collection, Paris Cosmopolite. The collection was presented at the Ritz Paris and was centred around polished Parisian dressing linked to the hotel, Place Vendôme and Gabrielle Chanel’s long association with the Ritz. The coat has clear perspex buttons, which replace the expected gilt hardware with a lighter, more contemporary finish. A red version of this coat appeared on the runway as look 17.

Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld was appointed creative director of Chanel in 1983 and spent thirty-six years reinterpreting the Chanel codes: the tweed suit, the quilted handbag, the little black dress, the CC monogram, across collections that also became known for their extraordinary runway spectacle. What he found, in his own words, was a “sleeping beauty” - a house with a clear heritage but no contemporary relevance. He rebuilt it into one of the most recognised luxury houses in the world.
