Curator's Note
Tom Ford opened Gucci's Spring/Summer 2001 runway with a series of dresses inspired by corsetry and lingerie. The collection placed particular emphasis on the construction of undergarments, with visible boning, shaped bustiers and sheer fabrics. Ford combined these designs with military-inspired tailoring, satin suits and utilitarian pieces elsewhere in the show. This dress was presented as Look 2. It features a nude fabric beneath a layer of fine black mesh, with black piping outlining the bust cups and tracing the seams of the fitted bodice.

Tom Ford for Gucci
Tom Ford was appointed creative director of Gucci in 1994 and rebuilt the house from the ground up, producing the defining Gucci by Tom Ford aesthetic of the 1990s and early 2000s. His signature slim tailoring, velvet suiting, satin shirts, cut-out dresses and 1970s sensibility is still referenced by designers today. Pieces from his decade at the house remain some of the most collected in the history of Italian fashion.
