Curator's Note

From McQueen's AW 2008 "The Girl Who Lived in the Tree" collection, inspired by a fairy tale McQueen invented around an elm tree in his garden. The skirt woven with two girls, beasts, fairies and flowers within a structured tulip silhouette is one of the more narrative pieces from a collection built on myth and transformation. The dress was exhibited at "Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse." A similar version of the dress was presented on the runway.

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen was founded in London in 1992 by Lee Alexander McQueen, who brought Savile Row tailoring together with a sustained engagement with history, mortality, the natural world and the relationship between beauty and violence. His runway shows, among them Dante, Deliverance and Plato's Atlantis, are among the most referenced in the history of fashion. The Savage Beauty exhibition, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, broke attendance records and confirmed his place in the canon of 20th-century design.
