Curator’s note

This Alexander McQueen skirt suit is from c. 2007, made in a black wool with a fine lurex fleck running throughout, which create a shimmering effect. The jacket is built with deep pleats extending over each shoulder and padded shoulders. Thin bands of black patent leather radiate from the rear collar down the back, tracing the same line as the concealed zip closure. The matching pencil skirt continues the patent leather detailing along its full-length two-way rear zip.

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen was founded in London in 1992 by Lee Alexander McQueen, who brought Savile Row tailoring together with a sustained engagement with history, mortality, the natural world and the relationship between beauty and violence. His runway shows, among them Dante, Deliverance and Plato's Atlantis, are among the most referenced in the history of fashion. The Savage Beauty exhibition, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, broke attendance records and confirmed his place in the canon of 20th-century design.
