Curator's Note

This coat is from Alexander McQueen's Autumn/Winter 1998 "Joan" collection, dedicated to Annabelle Neilson and widely considered among the most significant of McQueen's career. The sequin image is frequently misidentified as the Romanov sisters; it is in fact "Drei Mädchen" ("Three Girls"), photographed in 1845 by Carl Gustav Oehme. Examples from the collection are held in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen was founded in London in 1992 by Lee Alexander McQueen, who brought Savile Row tailoring together with a sustained engagement with history, mortality, the natural world and the relationship between beauty and violence. His runway shows, among them Dante, Deliverance and Plato's Atlantis, are among the most referenced in the history of fashion. The Savage Beauty exhibition, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, broke attendance records and confirmed his place in the canon of 20th-century design.
