Alexander McQueen Floral Jacket with Red Piping and Lace Trims (SS 2005)
Curator’s Note
This floral-print jacket was presented on the runway for Alexander McQueen's Spring/Summer 2005 collection, It's Only a Game. The show concluded with 36 models taking their positions on a giant illuminated chessboard, inspired by the chess scene in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. McQueen brought together references to Edwardian clothing, particularly the costumes in Peter Weir's 1975 film Picnic at Hanging Rock, with eighteenth-century tailoring and Japanese clothing. Worn on the runway with a pale pink striped puffball skirt, this cropped jacket has curved red satin piping that follows the bust and waist, a floral print and ivory lace trim at the neckline, cuffs and hem. The close-fitting cut and intricate arrangement of the piping reflect McQueen's approach to historical tailoring, which was a prominent element of the collection.

Alexander McQueen
Alexander McQueen was founded in London in 1992 by Lee Alexander McQueen, who brought Savile Row tailoring together with a sustained engagement with history, mortality, the natural world and the relationship between beauty and violence. His runway shows, among them Dante, Deliverance and Plato's Atlantis, are among the most referenced in the history of fashion. The Savage Beauty exhibition, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, broke attendance records and confirmed his place in the canon of 20th-century design.
