Curator’s Note

This dress is from from Sarah Burton's debut Spring/Summer 2011 collection for Alexander McQueen, the show that introduced her as creative director. The collection referenced English folklore and the natural world, and this piece carries its dense floral and foliage brocade across a fitted, structured jacket bodice with exaggerated padded shoulders and a Mandarin collar. A tailored peplum at the waist gives way to a layered, semi-sheer chiffon skirt in the same print, left with an unfinished hem. As seen on the runway.

Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton

Sarah Burton served as creative director of Alexander McQueen from 2010 to 2023, having worked alongside Lee McQueen for fourteen years before his death. Where McQueen's work was rooted in darkness, trauma and provocation, Burton drew the house toward the romantic and the natural - femininity examined from the inside, with the English rose, rites of passage and womanhood as recurring subjects. She is widely known as the designer of Kate Middleton's wedding dress for her marriage to Prince William in 2011, and was awarded an OBE in 2012 for services to the British fashion industry.
