Curator's Note

This gown is one of sixteen pieces from Alexander McQueen's final collection, presented after his death in February 2010. Finished by Sarah Burton and shown in an intimate presentation during Paris Fashion Week, Angels & Demons drew from the devotional art of the Northern and Italian Renaissance - finding, in McQueen's words, light and beauty in the art of the Dark Ages. The print on this gown is taken directly from the closed wings of Hugo van der Goes' Portinari Altarpiece: a grisaille rendering of the Annunciation, chosen because grisaille (painting that imitates sculpture) was the highest form of devotional art in the late Middle Ages. An identical example is held in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The dress is documented on pages 98–99 of Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, photographed by Sølve Sundsbø, and was exhibited at the Met's landmark Savage Beauty exhibition.

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen was founded in London in 1992 by Lee Alexander McQueen, who brought Savile Row tailoring together with a sustained engagement with history, mortality, the natural world and the relationship between beauty and violence. His runway shows, among them Dante, Deliverance and Plato's Atlantis, are among the most referenced in the history of fashion. The Savage Beauty exhibition, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, broke attendance records and confirmed his place in the canon of 20th-century design.
