Curator's Note
From Christian Dior's SS 2005 ready-to-wear under Galliano. The dress is made of burgundy silk chiffon cut on the bias with Art Nouveau-inspired floral print, tiered ruffle hem, self-fabric covered buttons on the side and matching stole with detachable Dior logo charm. The bias cut is one of the defining techniques of John Galliano's career, present in his collections from 1989 and fully established as his hallmark by his spring/summer 1994 Princess Lucretia collection. Galliano drew directly on the bias-cut eveningwear of the 1920s and 1930s as a primary reference, and on the work of Madeleine Vionnet in particular, whose mastery of the diagonal grain he consistently cited as an influence.

John Galliano for Christian Dior
John Galliano was appointed creative director of Christian Dior in 1996, bringing fifteen years of theatrical, historically driven collections to the house. His references ranged across Marchesa Casati, Egyptian antiquity, the Belle Époque, Japanese geisha culture and the Parisian demi-monde, each season staged as a full narrative. Under his direction Dior tripled its turnover and produced some of the most collected ready-to-wear and haute couture of the era, including the iconic Saddle Bag.
