Curator’s Note

John Galliano presented his Autumn/Winter 1990–1991 collection, Fencing, in Paris for the first time, which marked an important stage in his early career. The collection was inspired by the idea of an eighteenth-century swordswoman, and featured historical tailoring with fencing jackets, jodhpurs, corsetry and anatomical knitwear. This cream wool and angora-blend jacket was shown on the runway and is illustrated in Kerry Taylor's Galliano: Spectacular Fashion. The cable-knit pattern follows the anatomy of the human body and features a ribcage, collarbones, spine and muscles. It features two cut-out openings at the shoulders and back, and the ribbed waist creates a fitted, slightly flared shape. The jacket is an early example of Galliano's interest in using garment construction to interpret the human body.

John Galliano

John Galliano graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1984 with Les Incroyables, a collection drawn from the French Revolution bought in its entirety by Browns. He moved to Paris in the early 1990s, staging shows in borrowed hôtels particuliers that attracted Princess Diana, Madonna and LVMH, leading to appointments at Givenchy in 1995 and Christian Dior in 1996. Under his own label he ran concurrently with both houses, his work was shaped by romantic storytelling, bias-cut construction and historical characters drawn from across cultures and centuries. He was named British Designer of the Year four times.
