Christian Lacroix Textured Cotton Ensemble (SS 1988)
Curator's Note
This ensemble dates to the earliest years of Christian Lacroix's eponymous house, founded in Paris in 1987 following his tenure at Jean Patou. His debut haute couture collection in July of that year was met with extraordinary enthusiasm, establishing him as one of the most talked-about designers in Paris. His work was celebrated for its exuberant use of colour, exaggerated proportions and references to traditional Provençal dress, particularly the short skirts and voluminous shapes that became closely associated with his name. This ensemble brings together several characteristic elements of Lacroix's early work: puffed sleeves, a fitted waist, a short skirt and an unexpected pairing of black and purple. A version of the ensemble appeared on the Spring/Summer 1988 runway, with the top in a matching purple polka-dot colourway.

Christian Lacroix
Christian Lacroix was born in Arles, Provence in 1951 and opened his own couture house in Paris in 1987, the first new house to open since Yves Saint Laurent in 1961. His work referenced the clothes of 18th-century court, matador jackets, traditional Provençal prints, ecclesiastical embroidery in bright, vivid colours, reviving the pouf skirt and reintroducing the crinoline. He was named most influential foreign designer by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1987. The house closed in 2009 and was acquired by Spain's Sociedad Textil Lonia in 2025.
