Curator's Note

This silk chiffon dress was designed by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel’s Spring/Summer 1988 collection and appeared on the runway that season. Gold chains wrap around the bodice and hips, holding the knife pleats in place. The use of chain references a detail long associated with Chanel: Gabrielle Chanel famously weighted the hems of her jackets with fine chain so they would hang correctly. Here, Lagerfeld brings that detail to the outside of the dress. The skirt has a long side slit. The side of the dress fastens with a row of gold Chanel buttons, which are concealed beneath a pleated chiffon ruffle.

Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld was appointed creative director of Chanel in 1983 and spent thirty-six years reinterpreting the Chanel codes: the tweed suit, the quilted handbag, the little black dress, the CC monogram, across collections that also became known for their extraordinary runway spectacle. What he found, in his own words, was a “sleeping beauty” - a house with a clear heritage but no contemporary relevance. He rebuilt it into one of the most recognised luxury houses in the world.
