Curator's Note

Thierry Mugler became widely known for his sharply structured tailoring during the 1980s.  His suits had an exaggerated hourglass silhouette with padded shoulders, a nipped waist, and added volume at the hips. The fitted jacket of this suit has a peplum hem, pleating gathered at the back that makes a bustle-like volume. There are two oversized silver-tone buckles that fasten at the waist and curved zip pockets at the bust, which follow the line of the lapel. The matching pencil skirt is fitted through the hip, with a centre-back vent and concealed zip.

Thierry Mugler

Thierry Mugler founded his Paris house in 1973. Trained as a ballet dancer, he brought an understanding of the body in motion to clothing that treated the figure as something to be sculpted rather than simply dressed. The Mugler silhouette became one of the most recognisable in fashion. Drawing on science fiction, Old Hollywood glamour, fetishism and architecture, his vintage and archive pieces from the 1980s and 1990s are among the most sought-after, and his influence is visible in designers including Alexander McQueen and Daniel Roseberry.
