Curator's Note

From Yves Saint Laurent's Spring/Summer 1999 Haute Couture collection, presented on the runway. The hand-applied leather lace trim worked along every seam and edge showcases the meticulous handwork characteristic of the house's couture atelier. The accompanying silk mousseline blouse completes the runway ensemble.

Description

  • Three-piece set comprising a grey suede jacket, matching wrap skirt with belt, and printed silk mousseline blouse
  • Jacket: single breasted with long sleeves and round neckline
  • Decorative leather lace trim outlining seams and edges throughout
  • Skirt: asymmetric wrap-style front with coordinating purple suede belt
  • Blouse: paisley print in merlot tones with ruffled collar and tie neckline

Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent founded his Paris house with Pierre Bergé in 1961, having previously headed Christian Dior at the age of twenty-one following Dior's sudden death in 1957. Over four decades he reshaped the modern wardrobe: Le Smoking, the women's tuxedo suit he popularised in 1966; the Mondrian collection of the same year; the safari jacket; and a series of collections drawing on Chinese costume and textile traditions, Pop Art and the Ballets Russes. In 1966 he launched Rive Gauche, making him one of the first couturiers to offer ready-to-wear. He retired in 2002 and died in 2008. The house has since been led by Tom Ford, Stefano Pilati, Hedi Slimane and Anthony Vaccarello.
