Curator's Note

From Thierry Mugler's "Les Infernales" AW 1988 collection — one of his most referenced seasons. This black wool jacket is cut with an asymmetric zigzag front opening, collarless deep angular neckline, pointed cuffs, and back hem with single-sided notching. It was featured in an iconic campaign photographed by Manfred Thierry Mugler on the Chrysler Building in New York, worn by Claude Heidemeyer. The yellow version appeared on the runway and was later worn by Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) in Sex and the City.

Thierry Mugler

Thierry Mugler founded his Paris house in 1973. Trained as a ballet dancer, he brought an understanding of the body in motion to clothing that treated the figure as something to be sculpted rather than simply dressed. The Mugler silhouette became one of the most recognisable in fashion. Drawing on science fiction, Old Hollywood glamour, fetishism and architecture, his vintage and archive pieces from the 1980s and 1990s are among the most sought-after, and his influence is visible in designers including Alexander McQueen and Daniel Roseberry.
