Curator's Note

A strong example of Mugler's 1990s tailoring - the triple notched inverted lapel, peplum hem and curved flared cuffs are signature structural details that defined his approach to the female silhouette throughout the decade.

Thierry Mugler

Thierry Mugler founded his Paris house in 1973. Trained as a ballet dancer, he brought an understanding of the body in motion to clothing that treated the figure as something to be sculpted rather than simply dressed. The Mugler silhouette became one of the most recognisable in fashion. Drawing on science fiction, Old Hollywood glamour, fetishism and architecture, his vintage and archive pieces from the 1980s and 1990s are among the most sought-after, and his influence is visible in designers including Alexander McQueen and Daniel Roseberry.
