Curator's Note
From Paco Rabanne Haute Couture, dating to the 1980s. The openwork lattice fabric - evoking chain-mail but realised in woven textile - is a direct reference to Rabanne's foundational work with unconventional materials in the 1960s.

Paco Rabanne
Paco Rabanne founded his Paris house in 1966 with a debut collection titled Manifesto: 12 Unwearable Dresses in Contemporary Materials, introducing chainmail, plastic and metal discs linked with wire in place of fabric. Coco Chanel dismissed him as "the metal worker." His work was read by critics as part of the 1960s Space Age aesthetic alongside Pierre Cardin and André Courrèges, though Rabanne himself cited Marcel Duchamp and the Dadaist readymade as his primary influence. His chain-link minidresses were worn by Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin, Françoise Hardy and Audrey Hepburn, and he designed the costumes for the 1968 film Barbarella. He retired in 1999 and died in 2023. Julien Dossena was appointed creative director in 2013 and the house was rebranded as Rabanne the same year as Rabanne's death.
