Maison Martin Margiela Knitted Mini-Dress (AW 1990)

Maison Martin Margiela was founded in Paris in 1988 by Martin Margiela and Jenny Meirens. At the time the Paris fashion scene was dominated by exclusivity, opulence, maximalism and the supermodels.  Margiela on the other hand refused press engagement, replaced the branded logo with a plain white label, staged his shows in everyday settings had his models wear face masks so that attention fell entirely on the clothes. His artisanal line produced garments from found materials: vests from broken ceramic plates, sweaters knitted from old socks, a top made from a supermarket plastic bag. Among his most recognisable designs is the Tabi boot, which refers to the Japanese split-toe sock, first shown in 1988. Margiela resigned as creative director in 2009. John Galliano was appointed in 2014 and Glenn Martens in January 2025.
