Virginie Viard joined Chanel in 1987 as an intern in haute couture embroidery, on the suggestion of Karl Lagerfeld, and spent nearly thirty years working directly alongside him before being named his successor as artistic director in 2019 following his death. Her background in theatrical costume design and nearly thirty years inside the house's own ateliers gave her a deep understanding of how Chanel's clothes were constructed, which she channeled into loose, relaxed shapes, easy chiffon and a consistent return to Gabrielle Chanel's own wardrobe and the nonchalant ease she associated with the house. She stepped down in June 2024 after five years at the helm.
