Curator's Note

Karl Lagerfeld's Spring/Summer 1994 ready-to-wear collection for Chanel took inspiration from the streetwear and youth culture of the early 1990s. The collection featured short tweed suits in pastel colours, oversized jackets, cycling shorts and the now-famous Chanel roller skates. Lagerfeld reworked the classic Chanel suit with shorter skirts, fitted jackets and unconventional trimmings. This pink tweed jacket and skirt set is from the opening series of suits, which appeared on the runway in several colours. The jacket has a fitted waist and is decorated with braided vinyl cord in pastel blue, pink and yellow, known as Scoubidou trim. The braid forms a bow at the waist, with loose strands hanging beneath it. The same trim appears around the neckline, cuffs and skirt hem.

The design is one of the most recognisable from Lagerfeld's Spring/Summer 1994 collection. A turquoise version appeared on the runway worn by Helena Christensen, and Linda Evangelista wore a version for Vogue, photographed by Steven Meisel. A related design is held in the Victoria and Albert Museum's collection. Rihanna also wore a coral version for an appearance on Good Morning America in 2014, and a yellow variation appeared on Bunny MacDougal in Sex and the City.

Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld was appointed creative director of Chanel in 1983 and spent thirty-six years reinterpreting the Chanel codes: the tweed suit, the quilted handbag, the little black dress, the CC monogram, across collections that also became known for their extraordinary runway spectacle. What he found, in his own words, was a “sleeping beauty” - a house with a clear heritage but no contemporary relevance. He rebuilt it into one of the most recognised luxury houses in the world.
