Curator’s Note

This coat belonged to Joyce McQueen, the designer’s mother, and comes from the Estate of Lee McQueen. The coat retains its original press-sample labels, including a handwritten reference to the collection. McQueen's training in Savile Row tailoring remained central to his work throughout his career, particularly his experiments with cutting and draping. This coat has a wide asymmetric collar that extends across the chest and continues into a long, folded panel down the front. Its loose A-line shape and flared back are created through the arrangement of the fabric rather than conventional fitted tailoring.

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen was founded in London in 1992 by Lee Alexander McQueen, who brought Savile Row tailoring together with a sustained engagement with history, mortality, the natural world and the relationship between beauty and violence. His runway shows, among them Dante, Deliverance and Plato's Atlantis, are among the most referenced in the history of fashion. The Savage Beauty exhibition, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, broke attendance records and confirmed his place in the canon of 20th-century design.
