Curator's Note
This jacket was designed by Frida Giannini for Gucci's Fall/Winter 2008 collection and appeared on the runway, look 2. The collection referenced the Cossack and folk clothing that London's early 1970s crowd found at Portobello Market. Writing for Vogue, Sarah Mower called it one of Giannini's most confident collections so far and noted its references to hussars and to the folk textiles of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. This jacket combines both. It is cut like a military tunic, with a stand-up collar, epaulettes and crest buttons, and the central panel is embroidered with beads and patinated metal ornaments after Central Asian textiles. Bands of studded wool braid run on either side of the front, and black beaver trims the front edges and cuffs. The jacket was also shown in the season's advertising campaign, and was featured in a Harpers Bazaar editorial.

Frida Giannini for Gucci
Frida Giannini was Gucci's creative director from 2006 to 2015, bringing the house's own archive to the centre of her work: the Gucci Flora print, the Bamboo bag, the Horsebit, the Web stripe, and reimagining these codes for a new decade. Her collections are characterised by a slim, elongated silhouette, floral printed silk, tailored suiting and embellished eveningwear. As collector interest in 2000s and early 2010s designer fashion grows, her work is increasingly recognised for its construction quality and deep connection to Gucci's codes.
