Christian Dior
Christian Dior opened his Paris couture house in 1946 with the backing of textile magnate Marcel Boussac. His debut collection, presented in February 1947 and immediately dubbed the New Look, introduced rounded shoulders, a cinched waist and a full skirt that transformed the direction of postwar fashion within a season. The Bar Suit, the central piece of that first collection, has been reinterpreted by every creative director of the house since. Dior produced twenty-two couture collections before his death in 1957 and the house has since been led by Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri.
