Ralph Lauren
Ralph Lauren was born in the Bronx, New York in 1939 and came to fashion without formal design training, working as a sales assistant at Brooks Brothers before launching his label in 1967 with a line of wide neckties sold under the Polo name.He built his house around the aesthetics of American patrician life: the blazers and chinos of Ivy League universities, the tweeds and riding boots of the English country house, the denim and leather of the American West, the nautical whites of the Newport sailing circuit. None of this came naturally from his own background. He grew up working class and built his house around a world he had observed from the outside, reproducing its clothes, its settings and its atmosphere across five decades. His Purple Label line, launched in 1994, sits at the house's highest tier, constructed by hand in the Savile Row tradition using fabrics from English and Italian mills.. In 2015 he stepped down as CEO while remaining executive chairman and chief creative officer. In 2025 he became the first fashion designer to receive the US Presidential Medal of Freedom.
