Dolce & Gabbana
Dolce & Gabbana was founded in Milan in 1985 by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. Their collections drew on Southern Italian culture and the women of Sicily - the widow in black lace, the Madonna, the film heroines of postwar Italian cinema. They built a house identity around black lace, religious iconography, animal print, corsetry and Mediterranean florals. Throughout the 1990s their work stood in direct contrast to the minimalism that dominated the decade, with Madonna, Monica Bellucci and Kylie Minogue among the defining faces of the house.
