Curator’s note
This dress is from Gucci's Spring-Summer 2013 collection. For this season, which was Frida Giannini's final full ready-to-wear for the house, she turned toward colour. The designer was inspired by the Italian jet set of the 1960s and '70s Marella Agnelli, Marisa Berenson, filtered through the lens of photographers Richard Avedon and Gian Paolo Barbieri. Prints for the season referenced indirectly Japanese source material: a karung motif appeared on crisp paper-effect fabric, and this chrysanthemum design was developed from Japanese wallpaper. Ruffles recurred through the collection, used here as an exaggerated cap sleeve. This piece appeared on the runway (look 7), in Gucci's SS13 advertising campaign and was photographed for editorial use on Amanda Seyfried.

Frida Giannini for Gucci
Frida Giannini was Gucci's creative director from 2006 to 2015, bringing the house's own archive to the centre of her work: the Gucci Flora print, the Bamboo bag, the Horsebit, the Web stripe, and reimagining these codes for a new decade. Her collections are characterised by a slim, elongated silhouette, floral printed silk, tailored suiting and embellished eveningwear. As collector interest in 2000s and early 2010s designer fashion grows, her work is increasingly recognised for its construction quality and deep connection to Gucci's codes.
