Curator’s Note

A runway sweater dress from Chanel’s Paris-Dallas Métiers d’Art Pre-Fall 2014 collection by Karl Lagerfeld. Presented at Fair Park in Dallas, the collection revisited Chanel’s longstanding relationship with Neiman Marcus, which supported Gabrielle Chanel’s 1954 return and honoured her in 1957. This sweater dress combines a black rib-knit polo neck and yoke with patterned wool bands in red, blue and ochre. Deep fringe trims the yoke, cuffs and hem, with fine gilt chains worked through the knit.

Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld was appointed creative director of Chanel in 1983 and spent thirty-six years reinterpreting the Chanel codes: the tweed suit, the quilted handbag, the little black dress, the CC monogram, across collections that also became known for their extraordinary runway spectacle. What he found, in his own words, was a “sleeping beauty” - a house with a clear heritage but no contemporary relevance. He rebuilt it into one of the most recognised luxury houses in the world.
