Curator's Note

From Sarah Burton's AW 2011 collection for Alexander McQueen - her second since succeeding McQueen following his death in 2010. The tailcoat form, black wool layered with crêpe georgette, boucle front panels and fringe trim at cuffs and hem, draws on the house's tailoring heritage while the exposed gold-tone zips and raw seams keep it firmly in Burton's own register. Prototype sample piece.

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen was founded in London in 1992 by Lee Alexander McQueen, who brought Savile Row tailoring together with a sustained engagement with history, mortality, the natural world and the relationship between beauty and violence. His runway shows, among them Dante, Deliverance and Plato's Atlantis, are among the most referenced in the history of fashion. The Savage Beauty exhibition, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, broke attendance records and confirmed his place in the canon of 20th-century design.
