Curator's Note

From Christian Dior by Raf Simons, dating to around 2016, the dress reflects the Autumn/Winter 2015–16 Couture and Spring 2016 Couture period, when Simons showed elongated satin dresses with integrated jewellery and crystal embellishment. While the dress itself has a clean silk satin slip silhouette, the integrated necklace forms part of the design rather than an accessory, creating a striking focal point at the neckline. It is a strong example of Simons' minimalist approach to eveningwear at Dior.

Christian Dior

Raf Simons served as artistic director of Christian Dior's womenswear and haute couture collections from April 2012 to October 2015, succeeding John Galliano. His debut haute couture collection, shown in July 2012, revisited the house's signature silhouettes, including the Bar jacket and the A-line and H-line forms established by Christian Dior in the 1950s through a minimalist, modernist lens that ran through his tenure. The collection's cigarette trousers, worn beneath cropped dresses and ballgowns, became one of the defining silhouettes of his era at Dior.
