Curator's Note
For the Spring/Summer 2018 collection Chanel recreated Gorges du Verdon set complete with a working waterfall. Karl Lagerfeld's collection incorporated house tweed into fringed and near-transparent constructions, running alongside clear plastic outerwear and crystal-embellished jewellery. This top was featured on the runway (look 29) and is a great example of the fringed tweed treatment described in the collection's press coverage.

Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel
Karl Lagerfeld was appointed creative director of Chanel in 1983 and spent thirty-six years reinterpreting the Chanel codes: the tweed suit, the quilted handbag, the little black dress, the CC monogram, across collections that also became known for their extraordinary runway spectacle. What he found, in his own words, was a “sleeping beauty” - a house with a clear heritage but no contemporary relevance. He rebuilt it into one of the most recognised luxury houses in the world.
