Roberto Cavalli Black & Gold Gown (c. 2000s)

Roberto Cavalli founded his eponymous house in Paris in 1970, presenting his debut collection at the Salon du Prêt-à-Porter. The house was built on a technique Cavalli had developed and patented for printing directly onto leather and suede, work that had already drawn commissions from Hermès and Pierre Cardin before he launched under his own name. In 1972 he showed a women's collection in the Sala Bianca of the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, alongside Missoni, Krizia and Fendi, and opened his first boutique, Limbo, in Saint-Tropez the same year. These were the foundations of the house codes he would develop throughout the 1970s and 80s: animal prints, patchworked leather and suede, sand-blasted and embellished denim, and pleated silk in bold colour. Eva Düringer, whom he married in 1980, became his principal collaborator and later took on the role of creative director within the house.
