Curator's Note
From Tom Ford's Spring/Summer 2002 collection for Yves Saint Laurent, look 5. This collection is one of the most famous of Tom Ford's for the house, also known as the "Safari" collection. Yves Saint Laurent introduced the safari jacket, later known as the Saharienne, in 1968 - a belted silhouette borrowed from expedition and military uniforms. It became one of the house's most recognised designs, revived across decades of YSL collections (including Anthony Vaccarello's recent collections for the house). For SS 2002 Tom Ford based the collection around this theme.

Tom Ford for Yves Saint Laurent
Tom Ford was appointed creative director of Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche in 2000. His collections drew on the house's established codes of bohemian femininity, fluid silk eveningwear and the Le Smoking, while bringing richly referenced geographic collections that remain among the most distinctive of his career: the 2001 Mexican collection, the 2002 African Safari collection and his 2004 Far East finale. Pieces from his four-year tenure at YSL carry a different sensibility to his Gucci work - more romantic, more geographically expansive, and are increasingly represented in museum collections and private archives.
