Ralph Lauren
Ralph Lauren launched his label in 1967 with a line of wide neckties sold under the Polo name. He built his house around the aesthetics of American patrician life: the blazers and chinos of Ivy League universities, the tweeds and riding boots of the English country house, the denim and leather of the American West, the nautical whites of the Newport sailing circuit. None of this came naturally from his own background - he grew up working class in the Bronx and reproduced that world across five decades of collections. His Purple Label line, launched in 1994, sits at the house's highest tier, constructed by hand in the Savile Row tradition using fabrics from English and Italian mills.
